No they are referring to the light emitter causing the stripes the dent reflects the light at different angles from the normal body shape. In paintless dent removal these stripes aid the body man to see where he should massage the metal with a poly tipped hammer while adding gentle pressure with a ninja stick from behind.
When cars were made out of 18 ga metal this would not have worked
Never try to tell me it can't be done
When I have to paint I use KBS products

Not the same thing, but it reminds me of how one of Intel's 3D sensors works. It's f'n genius. It's called "coded light" and allows 3D depth scanning with a single camera.

I have a bunch of 3D sensors, but the coded light sensor is by far the coolest technology.

There are "2D" scanners (optical CMM) that work great on flat patterns, translate offline into code for 2D cutting systems such as water jet and laser. The emitter housed in an 'A' frame over a glass screen 48" x 48", with receptors underneath. It's old tech but places still use them. The emitter light looks like it's typing flashes across the part surface, on X axis, then a short Y move, carriage return and all. IIRC it could be set for different resolutions, a fine-pitch scan isn't productive on a simple pattern
