My grandson needed to make a replica of a WWI battle shovel for a Middle School Project.
We started with a worn out spade shovel from the Pawn Store, and reshaped the spade tip, removed the handle, and reshaped the handle piece. We tried to make the metal flange out of recycled metal but could not shape it accurately. instead we faked it using Bondo to mold the elevated layer and made fake rivets with punched out plastic. We turned an oak handle and distressed it and finished it with shellac and boiled linesead oil and then hit the spade with a Bronzed spray paint for patina. I think it looks pretty good for a mock up...
