What is the Closest Drill Size?

Often, I just want to know the closest drill size. Doesn't matter to me if it is fractional, number, letter, or metric. This search occurs often enough that I sat down and found a way that works best for me. Maybe it will help you too.

Thanks for that clever technique, Rick. Years ago I made a more conventional chart. Since all the required drill size data was already computerized as part of the work on my webpage, I simply wrote a program to meld all the sizes for all the crazy, inferial drill names with the metric sizes to create a single chart of sequential drill sizes, smallest to largest.

The chart is shown below. Folks who would like a copy can email me and I'll send one along.

    Code:

    Marv,

Maybe it is just me, but I'm faster with a two dimensional search than with a linear one.

Just curious, but did you try out my table with a random hole size?

Yes, I did and it works well.

Despite many years spent with matrix algebra, my mind remains firmly linear.

    Rick and Marv,

Great set of tables and I made a similar table for finding the best press fit holes sizes under 1/2" dia. I kept in a clear vinyl sleeve.

However, a few years ago I invested in buying the Calculated Industries Machinist Calc Pro for less than $40 when at sale at Enco. It has an extensive set of calculations and table look-ups. My calculator version is no longer available and they now have a more expensive version that includes specifying the materials to be machined. Nonetheless, I still use the drill size feature the most using the "+" or "-" key to find drill sizes larger or smaller than the exact drill size for press or sliding fits.

I also like the free Android phone apps "Knurling Calculator" and "Machinist Buddy" (has a lot of calculations and reference tables).

    Regards,
    Paul

My DRILL program from my website does something similar. Below is a sample output hunting a drill to drill a 0.372 hole...

number of drills read from data file = 371

D find Drill designation given hole size
S find hole Size given drill designation
T find Tapdrill for any tap and dot
F find tapdrill for thread-Forming tap
    X step drilling calculations
    H display this Help/Menu
    M display this Help/Menu
    Q Quit (Esc also)

    (D,S,T,F,X,H,M,Q) ?

    {[d].dd or [d-]d/d (e.g. 1.5 or 1-1/2)} Hole Size ? 0.372

    (9.25 mm) with size 0.3642 (-0.0078)
    (9.30 mm) with size 0.3661 (-0.0059)
    (U) with size 0.3680 (-0.0040)
    ***** (9.40 mm) with size 0.3701 (-0.0019) *****
    (9.50 mm) with size 0.3740 (+0.0020)
    (3/8) with size 0.3750 (+0.0030)
    (V) with size 0.3770 (+0.0050)

    (D,S,T,F,X,H,M,Q) ?
