Whilst the welder didn't have screens up, he was using his hand for a wind block, and was wearing correct PPE - signage should have been enough for observers to be protected - but some numbnut lifting my helmet whilst I'm welding would be considered as horseplay or worse.
You are right there! someone would have gotten a knuckle sandwich.

desbromilow, #8 I believe someone pulled the mask off to remind the welder how unpleasant it is to look at the arc. Maybe the welder thinks he's working alone in that place...

With the exception of the guy grinding towards the torch bottles most of the rest are examples of making do with what you have available in an attempt to protect their eyes. Many races of people around the planet are not nearly as susceptible to the UV radiation of a welding arc as most are in other countries. I've known guys from India who could weld all day long out in the bright sunlight wearing only dark sunglasses and then thread a needle afterwards to sew up their torn shirts. A lot of that is a learned ability to position the rod so it is between you and the arc hiding the most intense part of the arc and using smaller lower amperage rods such as a 2mm 6013 rod
Never try to tell me it can't be done
