Brings back bad memories for me. When I was teaching, our new high school opened in August 2003. We had a very COLD spell at the beginning of winter break. The night before classes resumed in January 2004, the Fire Department was notified by the alarm company that water flow was detected in the fire suppression system at the High School. FD was told the flow as at the old HS, so they went there and spent considerable time searching the large building for a problem.

While the FD was not finding anything, they requested the to check other buildings. Driving by the new building, water was leaking out the front doors . He contacted the FD. When they arrived water was backed up 2-3" against the inside of the doors on the first floor. As they entered, water rushed out the doors, they followed the flow that was cascading down the main stairs to the library area where 6" of water was backed up behind the doors and squirting out under and between the double doors.

A 6" pipe had frozen and broke in an improperly insulated space over the library. It was speculated that the pipe broke during the cold snap, but it did not leak until the ice thawed as the weather warmed.

On its way down to the first level water founds it way through holes where cables went through the floor and flooded the main network switch gear room which disabled all of the phones and communications in the building and several buildings whose network traffic was routed through there.

All of the carpet in all of the rooms that got wet had to be ripped up and replaced. Did you know that water from a fire suppression system is considered toxic? Since there is no flow in the system, the water is considered stagnate.

It sure did make a mess!!!!

No thanks. Plenty of other places in the world to see while I still can. I am positive I will not be thinking, “Darn, I never got to see New York City.”
