This set up would not be OSHA approved. Do not try at home. Carl.

It may not but it is a great way for a company to repurpose their drops which would otherwise be sent to a scrap bin even if scrap steel paid them say $250.00 per ton. there are approximately 800 3/8" USS grade washers per pound or about $200.00 per hundred pounds or approximately 5000 washers in bulk in plated quantities. If you netted 1000 lbs of washers from a ton of scrap you would still have $125.00 worth of scrap and $2000.00 worth of washers

I worked in American factories for 40 years and a punch press running that way would never be allowed. I'm not saying it makes good use of left over material, just it doesn't matter how much money the factory owner makes, the loss of one worker's finger isn't worth it.

To be safe the press should be one shot, (not continuous running) when the ram comes down either a guard or other hand restraints should keeps the operator safe. Also if you are handling sharp sheet metal edges you should wear gloves. One of my greatest fears was to have any part designing a machine that hurt anyone.

A simple cylindrical clear acrylic shield around the punch would prevent any flesh injuring mishaps, one shot or one million cycles per minute.
One thing you can never tell by these videos is, were they posted at actual machine speed or sped up for the wow effect. When viewing it in stopped action mode using the arrow keys to advance it becomes plain that in a few of the frames at least the operator repositioned the sheet more than once between strokes, indicating to me at least that the video was probably posted at a higher speed.
Gloves? yeah that is a given when handling materials with sharp edges, but not everyone wears gloves all the time. Most of the time I rarely wear gloves even though many times I should.
