Okay, so I had to look this up because it's too interesting. The Voxon VX1 is a "swept volume" display.

There's a projector in the base of the unit, facing up. Then there's a translucent sheet that's physically moving very fast vertically. The projector projects "slices" of the volume as the translucent sheet moves up and down. This makes a persistence of vision display, with each slice of the model hitting the sheet in a sort of 3D raster. Very cool.
