What is going on here?

In the Mesta foundry like other foundry' which produced very large castings often made their intricate casting molds directly in the packed dirt floor casting many parts at the same time. They would haul the crucible of molten metal over the mold and complete the pour. What is shown is most likely the castings after the top part of the mold has been removed and the sand swept away.

The sides of the mold have yet to be installed. See the one on the right...

I believe #2798 shows the foundry molding floor with a lot of what appear to be core prints placed in the mold. The pattern has already been removed.

Yup. That is what is going on. They are placing the pattern cores. The areas where you do not want metal in the casting.
