    The same design is still used for animals with broken legs. The rounded tip below the foot allows the animal to use the affected limb to walk while it is in recovery.

    I was unlucky enough to have one used on me in the early 90's. It is called a Sager traction splint. Shattered my femur into about a dozen pieces. I can tell you this much, the relief when they ratcheted the bones apart was amazing.
