    Valveless steam engine

This is an interesting design for a valveless steam engine. The piston is a solid rod with a flat on one side. As the flywheel revolves an ingenious linkage causes the piston to not only go up and down but also turn from side to side thru an arc of about 30 degrees. This side-to-side motion alternately exposes the flat to the steam inlet (thus providing steam to power the piston) and then to the exhaust outlet.

This short video clip shows the motion of the linkage...

Under power, the linkage is just a blur so I shot this video using the slow motion setting on my camera. Unfortunately it's too long. I keep forgetting that in the slow motion mode only a few seconds recording are going to turn into a rather lengthy video. Feel free to stop it when you've seen enough.

Because the engine is completely symmetric, reversing it involves nothing more than interchanging the steam and exhaust.

I just checked my Youtube channel and both these videos are listed as public, as are all my videos stored there.

Could I ask the two gentlemen having problems to go to this page

    http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/l...8339#post68963

and report whether they can view the videos there?

Also, can other visitors to this page please report if they can view the videos here?

I can confirm that I can see them now. Earlier I couldn't see the videos, then tried to watch them on YouTube (by clicking the YouTube icon in the lower-right of the video player), and they were listed as private on YouTube.com.

Not sure why that happens; another one we occasionally see is that embedding videos will be erratically disallowed.

Thanks, Jon. Sounds like another binary mystery; at least it is to me. Well, at least it seems to be working now.

    Marv,

Very interesting design. How large is the bore? Thank you for the posting.

The bore is a whopping 1/4". The piston is made of a piece of drill rod of the same size.

Thank you for sharing this Marv. Definitely an interesting design with a whole lot of motion going on. Curious if it will self start?
