    Useful Trick

An easy and useful trick when some times the standard numbers of drill bits (In my case Ø16 & Ø16.5mm) isn't suitable for our needs and the price of midrange numbers is too expensive to bay one and perhaps for only one time use.
I have use an Ø6mm aluminum pipe (because it was at front of me),
but a piece of an Ø6mm steel rod it is a better choice with longer life.
At the middle of the one edge I make a cut using my grinder with a cutting disk 1mm.
Then I passed through a strip of emery-cloth Num-150 and wrapped anticlockwise.

This is operation is known as honing. The results are suitable for a low speed shaft/ bushing combination.
An improvement would increase the rod diameter [wood dowel is fine] so only 1 or 2 wraps encircle the rod [mandrel], delivering more pressure to the diameter being worked. That also reduces misalignment to bore. Use cutting oil, the mandrel will do admirable job chucked in a drill press.
The fastest cutting is RPM producing 45° grind lay while stroking straight axis forward and back, without letting the paper bell-mouth entry or exit.
    Sincerely,

That's why we all come here! I don't try to be a know it all, while dispensing conditions encountered.
Been a l-o-n-g time since I worked in a shop that had everything. Owner retired, I collected just a bit of the equipment, but recall so many of the jobs and how tricky things were solved. No one could even spell CAD, EDM, barely CNC yet.

For many years, I used that method with wooden dowels, mostly in a drill press & didn't really think of using the method on steel. Looking beyond the box but I have a large range of bits but very useful all the same.
    Thanks for posting.
