where are the road barriers? When you pour cement or lay asphalt, you must tell that to the road users.

Dumb could go without saying. We are not privy to the circumstances behind his front wheel falling into the trench though. Once in the trench you and I both know that unless the pickup was 4-wheel drive with inter differential locks, tunning the wheels as far to the right as possible and backing up, otherwise that wheel is not coming out without a jack. Hense your analogy of dumb for continuing to struggle and mine for done are closely related, once the rear wheel dropped off, he was done and not going anywhere soon without assistance.

I had that happen to me in one of Ohio's many ice storms. 77 Dodge 4 x 4. I had stopped on a paved country road that had multiple cars off in the ditches on both sides of the road. I was talking to one of the drivers about the possibility of pulling him out. As we talked, I slid off the side sideways into the ditch due to the crown in the road. I was able to drive 100 ft forward and backward, but could not get turned out of the ditch. Walked home, went back in the afternoon when the sun had melted the ice, drove right out.
