There is a huge Monsanto Phosphate refining operation in South East Idaho that dumps a truckload of molten slag about every minute, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can see the red hot material from miles away. It's even slightly radioactive. Some of the slag was ground up and used in paving and construction in the nearby towns of Soda Springs and Pocatello, Idaho. The parking lots of some buildings have measurable amounts of radiation far above normal background levels.
The phosphate is used to make herbicide.
