Tricks for filming food for advertisements - GIF

Tricks for filming food for advertisements. Good background for the "Ad vs. reality" fast food photos that we see frequently online. I believe some of these filming tricks are actually illegal in some countries. Still interesting.

I've long contended that, if one interprets purposeful omission, misdirection, fine print exception, etc. as lying, then EVERY advertisement is a lie.

    Some of my favorites...

Only $49.95 (small print "in four easy payments")
$19.95 clad with two milligrams of pure gold (about eight cents worth of gold)
Liberty insurance ad trumpets "accident forgiveness" (at bottom of same screen in fine print "accident forgiveness not available in CA)

and finally, the magical Sears 6.5 HP shop vac...

6.5 HP = 4.85 kW, a typical 15 amp, 120 volt house circuit can deliver around 1.5 kW

Sears, we will not miss ye: Sears filed for bankruptcy last month. Interestingly, Sears was originally a catalog mail-order business, like the Amazon of its day, but it is now being displaced by Amazon, who sent out what I believe is their first-ever print toy catalog for this holiday season, which is a stunning piece of commercial propaganda geared to the under-10 crowd.

The shop-vac ad is telling. Purchasing (or even more broadly, ownership of physical objects itself) seems either broken, or extraordinarily inefficient, or fraught with Information asymmetry. Imagine a shop-vac "ad" that listed the most important points of shop-vac ownership first.

-The suction power is largely dependent on a clean filter. Just bang it on a rock! It's free.
-Most of the attachments are worthless.
-Don't buy those filter bags, that's a classic predatory Razor and blades business model

Plain speak: We will charge you the higher rate from the get-go so we don't have to raise your rate after you have an accident.

They lost a lawsuit a few years ago on air compressor HP fraud.
Crapsman would claim this to be "develops" 6.5HP, using inrush starting current of 9X nominal.
We know this is a lie, but they keep doing it.
I quit buying from them back when they still had a catalog mail order. I ordered a 4x24 belt sander and $100 of 4x24 belts. I got the new improved 4x21 belt sander and the 4x24 belts.

I really enjoyed the Gif, Jon. What they do to promote via film is horrific let alone print. I always love the fake sushi at the wanna be sushi bars...exit stage left, unless there is an actual Japanese sushi chef, then I look at their fish and him in the eye.

Funny Marv, I caught that Liberty fine print a while back...now I pause at the end of all Big pharma ads so my wife and I can get a good laugh at how and likely one would not live through this treatment. At $100k per, enticing public hypochondria to run to their doctors vested interest in selling their products at ~$200 a visit and $50-$10k per dose, plus being held hostage to enthralling scenes and music jingles...what a world we have created.

I feel sad that the old Sears lost there way through 1-800-Bad-Mgmt of the Heir apparent's and shareholders. It wasn't Amazon in my opinion, just bad decisions takeing them away from a century old standard that worked...affordable products of reasonable quality for a good price...not a lot of hyp, no BS and good guarantees. The catalog to Online business is Not a big jump...they already had the warehouse and distribution systems, but perhaps too heavily invested in brick and mortar with bad hiring management. Walmart is transitioning and if they do better with their employees may have a decent market share.

I know two gourmet cooks. They'll admit no one's efforts resemble those in commercials.
