If your not 100% sure of how to do it, don't do it next to something that is expensive.

Judging from the angle of the rope if the tree had fell towards them it would have landed on them anyway.
I'm guessing between the three of them none of them had a vehicle to tie to the rope. As large as the crown of the tree and being in full bloom even if it had been leaning away from the structure a slight wind from the wrong direction would have still netted the same results

It also looks like the wedge was cut toward the barn, if there even was a wedge.
It is easy to underestimate the weight of the tree but gravity ALWAYS works.

You mean gravity always wins. Just depends where you start. Dropped hundreds of trees and the ones we had like this we did very carefully as Frank said attached to something heavy like a 3 ton tractor.

I have a fruitless mulberry that is mostly dead, with a trunk diameter of about 3 1/2 feet I plan on removing, but some of the limbs are over a foot and a half in diameter and 30 feet long. I have no choice but to section them into shorter pieces as I remove them before even thinking about felling the trunk otherwise there would be no controlling it even with the size of the equipment I have

Yep. People really underestimate the weight of a tree. We took ones down that were nearly 100 feet long. When they hit, even with our decent size International 444 with a loader we had to section them. It gets to heavy.

What you are describing is a pretty big tree if you have 12 inch branches.

What I am not looking forward to is drop trees that are close to our buildings. We left as many as we could when we cleared out the first acre of our 7 acres of forest on our lot. We left the Ash, the Maples and the Oak and Cedars where possible. Now the Ash are all dying due to the importation of the Emerald Ash Borer. Beautiful destructive little bug. The majority of the trees are Ash, and they are dead or dying. I have a friend that was a professional logger. I know when I am out experienced. He's dropped tens of thousands of trees. I'll be tapping him for help on this job!

The trees we felled near buildings like this were all limbed on the building side, roped off to another tree or truck then wedged on the routes side
