Some people get so cuaght up on what ever it is they are listening to and can completely forget there is more to the world than the sounds in their headphones.

I don't see any headphones. But I do have another perspective on this.... What if the hiker is deaf and blind in one eye? Granted, he should have better situational awareness! Any old Boyscouts on this site? Remember the rules for felling a tree or working with an ax? The lumberjack is concentrating on his cutting and I have no doubt his saw is screaming but he is also low to the ground and not easily seen.
PS.. I'm deaf and blind in one eye.
