    That is not really a ripper, it looks like a tiller with a soil former after the tiller...

    Yep, as noted by the dirt being tossed out at the front. But what would require furrows that deep and close together

    Cound be a number of different things:
    drainage pipes
    heating pipes
    flood irrigation
    nursery stock
    onions
    bulb flowers (tulips)
    root stock flowers (iris)
    potato
    rice

    I looked this up and it would be called a bed former and here is a potato example:

    I'm quite familiar with raised row bedders, never seen one place the rows that close together or cut vertical side furrows. but things change in the AG industry every week it seems, and not always for the better. This spring a near-by neighboring cotton farmer bought a new John Deere tractor, don't know the series of it since it has never made it to the fields past our place. But I saw the dealer's service truck go past almost daily from last February through late May
