    Tractor gear shift cover cup.

A Ford 2600 arrived last night for a temporary swap for my Case 431
Both tractors are near equals in power output but the Ford is lighter and shorter also a foot lower in height.
My case has a medium duty 6 ft shredder mower, the Ford has a much heavier duty 5 ft brush hog shredder mower.
The Ford has foam filled front tires, something that is appreciated in the mesquite brush I need to cut.
However the ford had a gear shift problem we noticed while unloading it and there was water contamination in the transmission oil.
the gear shift lever just needed a bit of weld build up to fix that problem, And while I had it apart I decided to cure the water getting in the transmission problem by making a new cupped cover to replace the missing one on the gear shift lever.
I started with a fat of about 1/8" thick heated it up and bet it to about 1/16" thick then heated it up and shaped it into a cupped shape with the punch and die I made for that purpose

I pushed a rubber sleeve down onto the shaft

the factory spring keeper forces the shift lever to stay in place but the added rubber sleeve will further prevent water contamination

You would be a great person to loan stuff too, as it would come back in better condition then borrowed.
    Nice fix.
I see the other post of the die.

I started puling the front axle off today because the center pivot bushing is so far gone the the tractor has about 4 inches of castor. So much that the control arms are bent

The number of old tractors I have seen with deteriorated/missing boots on shift levers an water/oil foam filled transmissions/hydraulics is numerous. Gives a good indication of how often some people check fluid levels.

    yeah ya think.
I called the guy and asked him when was the last time he had changed the engine oil, all I got was dead silence on the phone for a couple minutes.
    never mind I told him.
Judging by the condition the front axle was in I figured all he had done since he bought the thing 4 years ago was to use it a few times a year to mow with and had possibly not done anything other than put a battery on it in all that time

Some friends of mine have had to go through some very steep learning curves themselves simply because they don't know what they don't know, and are either too proud, too embarrassed, too arrogant, too ashamed or possibly too stupid to ask someone for advice. Although I hesitate to call any of my friends stupid, Insane yeah, but not stupid, as we all at one time or another have made that one mistake when we slap our heads and say well dummy how do you get yourself out of this stupid predicament.
