sleipner make these for quite large excavators, and the excavator is towed by a 793F haultruck by dumping a bucket of dirt in the tray of the truck, and then putting the bucket on the dirt as a cushion/bearing. The truck then drives normally towing the excavator behind it.

My brain kept reading the title word dollies and doilies. I could not understand why they'd need a doily for an excavator... My grandma made doilies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doily I think my brain is officially fried for today!

So, is that just to keep the tracks from making a mess of the roadway? It doesn't look like something I'd want to run much faster than they are going, but I've seen much worse looking rigs in the little pulpwood logging trucks back home, which go flying up and down the roads with bits falling off.

For topical application, only. Not to be taken internally or used in com-
bination with other drugs or alcohol, except as directed by your shaman.
Do not operate heavy equipment, unless you actually know how to.

I believe it is to minimize wear to the undercarriage system for the tracks. Roller and track plates and sprockets have wear happening during movement, so minimizing movement decreases that wear and so saves significant cost. Pricing undercarriage parts for even a small excavator are expensive....so I think its a safe assumption that these big ones are proportionally expensive!

Not only to reduce wear and tear on the tracked machine but if you have ever had to follow a tracked machine in a welding rig you know how rough the surface gets behind them.
