THREAD MILLING DEVICE!

You ought to try talking with gun guys online. They are the worst. They love to rip newbies a new one for not knowing as much as they know, for being...well, newbies. I've also seen this in a shooting range I used to use. The guy in charge that day which I already knew, was full of himself. He thought he was the MAN. This young guy wanted to rent a Glock and shoot it with his girlfriend. The guy in charge asked him all sorts of stuff about which "model" of gun he wanted. He was purposely embarrassing this guy in front of his girlfriend. No I was not mistaking his intent. It was very obvious. Okay so all you gun guys, I am one of you and may be opening a can of worms here. I'm not trying to. Just telling what I have seen. It happens in lots of different forums, not just guns. I've witnessed a smidgen of it here. Not nearly as much as some other forums. For the most part you all are some of the nicest ones I've interacted with. Okay I'm bracing for a potential barrage.

Floradawg, I agree with your words! Completed this month a year participating in this forum, I'm still a novice here ... For an old man like me, participating helps me as a therapy, keeping my tired mind always busy. However, a minimum of respect must be maintained!

However, "experts" on this forum have already condemned this device in advance. Rest assured, I no longer intend to occupy you with my bad ideas...

There are a bunch of uses for a thread mill. Making high-precision lead screws is just one of them. Thread milling is used in industry so it cannot be that bad an idea. Getting industrial equipment to do it is a problem for hobbyists, so I for one would be much interested in how you do it. I would not worry about the nay-sayers. And I see that there are already several people who think this is a good thing besides me. Please, don't let the few who don't like it run you off!

I'm another gun guy. And despite having been a shooter since I was 4 years old, now approaching 66YO, though I wish I could deny what you say, I can't, because you're right, there are folks like that. Heck, I'm no expert. I was, for a few years, an expert photographer. Then digital photography came along and changed everything. Now I'm no longer an expert. I was an expert SATCOM operator/maintainer for the USAF for most of a dozen years, too. That's all changed, as well. And I had a long dry spell in there with guns, since all my long guns got stolen when I got shipped to Germany in the early 90's. Had two kids there, and another one shortly after returning to the States, and SWMBO disallowed guns as a hobby for the longest time. Something about feeding, housing, and clothing kids. So I'm not an expert on them anymore, either. I'm working on becoming an expert machinist. I figure it will take me about another, oh, 20 or 30 years. If I have them. I'm an owner of several metalworking and machining groups on Groups.io, most were formerly on Yahoo groups. I'm still learning, and will be at least until they nail the box shut on me. It is my personal belief that all the experts aren't as expert as they may think they are. What I did when I was learning to be an expert is try to help people who were not experts in what we were doing to become so, and to learn as much from them as I could, since their experiences were going to be different from mine. So I was pretty sure I could learn from them, too. Old military maxim is "If it's stupid, but it works, it isn't stupid." There is a reason for that.

WmRMeyers, thank you for your comments! I only disagree when you believe that there are "few nay-sayers" on this forum. I follow the posts with some frequency (and I don't intend to do it anymore) and this is not my perception... I am not the one who loses with the arrogant stance of these nay-sayers. Those who could benefit in some way from my idea lose, either on this forum or elsewhere ...

I follow the posts with some frequency (and I don't intend to do it anymore) and this is not my perception. I can withstand frequent toothache, kidney stones, deviation of the cervical spine and even a heart attack, but I can't stand a lack of respect. For a dead thread we are just going to provide a decent burial by not talking about it anymore!

Makes more sense to me to ignore the dunderheads, but it's your choice. Just sorry you feel that way, as I'd have liked to see more about it.

WmRMeyers you and I have some things in common. I will be 67 this month and I was also in the USAF. (go Falcons) I was a RICMT (radar inputs and countermeasures technician) at Fort Lee AF Station in Virginia. We were the headquarters for the 20th NORAD Region. My final year I served at Murphy Dome AFS as a WCT (Weapons Control Tech) in Alaska. My job, in addition to other duties, was to scramble interceptors to "escort" the Soviets out of our area. I was in for 4 years from 1974 to 1978. I'm not an expert on anything, Jack of all interests, master of none. I do some metalworking, some woodworking, target shooting and a little astronomy. And whatever else I find interesting.

Picking up on the different forum threads after being away for a week:
M4A: -Jeez, man - this thread really went off the rails.
I'm truly sorry for hurting your feelings.

I just want to say that I DO appreciate your ideas and capabilities shown in several posts,
hence I merely suggested a more "how-to" approach in filming: as this is a forum for DIYers who (as I),
try to learn more by sharing, asking, suggesting and also (hopefully) constructively criticizing builds.

For my own few projects, there's has been a constant rollercoaster of progresses and setbacks, often helped by fellow HMT:ers,
by them pitching in with thoughts, suggestions and experiences bigger than mine.
For instance, achieving a good finish in my projects is a "field of improvement" I've yet to embrace,
exactly by relying on these expert HMT:ers (including you) who makes all these nicely finished builds.

I'd like to believe my own ignorance can only be fixed by actually humbly listening to critical, competent and loyal friends,
carefully considering and testing their shared input against my own believed "truths". Pretty rough cure at times, I admit.
Heck - they all waste some pretty good time in reading/ watching, thinking over and writing answers to me -
who am I to judge, brand or diminish them?
I try to focus on "principles rather than personalities", and may the best practice or argument "win",
anyone else's or mine - that doesn't matter at all to me.

I sincerely hope you can get over those feelings of persecution and victimhood you're seemingly in,
and instead will enjoy and harvest HMT at its fullest and diverse generosity.
