To test the space shuttle Enterprise's landing capabilities, it was carried to 24,000 feet on a modified 747, and blasted off using explosive charges.

Back in the mid 80s I saw the 747 transport piggy backing the space shuttle circling low over New Orleans for local citizens. Then a few years later witnessed the shuttle re-entry heading home to Florida with a dark smoke trailing behind it and a moment later the sonic boom.

We would hear a double boom in Florida

My father-in-law was an air traffic controller and guided it in when it had to land at White Sands Missile Range then we all got to go out and see it. I also saw the shuttle burning up on re-entry in the Austin area.
