They're pretty versatile. You can get threaded ones. I think there are probably some other styles. In the video above they're installing Nelson Studs as a form of concrete embeds like rebar. Those little mushroom caps will hold the concrete tight against the plate and keep it from separating after pouring.

You can get "domestic" size versions of these for say 2-8 mm diameters but they are still quite expensive. For these smaller size studs they use a capacitor discharge method, no ferrule needed, often sold as car dent puller systems. You can search for "cdi stud welding". It's possible to weld a stud to a fairly thin plate with no marks on the opposite side. I could have used one for a recent project with stainless sheet! I believe they can do mild steel, stainless, aluminium and brass studs.
