wow - when I was young they were picked by hand, multiple picks per season - not sure what happened off season though.

Not sure, but maybe they are digging up the actual plants after they have finished fruiting to set the next seasons plants. They will propagate the new plants from the runners.

I would agree with that as well.
When I was a teenager, I worked at a strawberry farm pulling thistles by hand that were in with the strawberry plants. Heavy leather gloves were a requirement, and wet soil.
All the strawberries were picked by hand, either you-pick-it or you paid more for someone else to pick them for you. I think the plants were ripped up every 5 years and new plants put in. So he used a rotation method so only 1/5 of the entire field was new plants at any one time.

It seems you are correct. Not one berry is seen in the reaper video.

Strawberries are grown where I live and are picked by hand. I was thinking this was maybe fruit for processing but i didn’t really notice any fruit on the conveyor either. Though it seemed a rather slow process for removal of the spent plant, so I don’t know.

Strawberries were commonly hand picked. I can stand all day long, cannot imagine stooping any prolonged period.
My Dad gardened strawberries his entire life, he wasn't very tall and did alright. When people asked how he managed, "Oh it's better now. When I was very young, broke my leg picking them".
They'd be a little shocked, "What happened...?". With a perfectly straight face, "Well, shucks. Fell off the dang ladder".
    Sincerely,
