We all know the importance of starting threads square to a pilot hole and there are many excellent devices for doing so on the forum but this is my simple method which works for me.
I use an old small drill chuck from a dead power drill which has a hardened shank and a simple sliding sleeve fits this allowing the rotation within, (in my case an old valve guide) this is mounted in the stationary pillar drill chuck.
This method gives me a good sense of feedback from taps down to 8BA and a bottoming tap will then follow true.
