For many years I managed my metalworking activities without having soft jaws for my three jaw chuck. However, the subject of soft jaws was raised by readers of the Model Engineers' Workshop and I decided it would be a good subject for the magazine.
Realising that many readers would have elderly chucks for which soft jaws would no longer be available, or of unknown origin, I decided that making them should also be part of the article. Having then made them and put them to use, for the article, I soon wondered why I had attempted to manage without them for so many years as they do make many difficult tasks easy and/or with a more accurate result being achieved.
My method for making soft jaws is on this video.
Also, there is an article on my website showing some of their uses. This is at Using Soft Jaws in the 3 Jaw Chuck
