If you ground the locking pinto a flat wedge, then turned it 90 degrees and notched it, you could double the number of divisions by being able to locate on the tooth or in the groove between the teeth.
This how-to reminds me that I have an old flex-plate from a Nissan laying around. Upon looking it up it turns out to be a 120 tooth ring gear which would give an excellent number of usable divisions with plenty of resolution on my 12" lathe. Flex plates are a fairly inexpensive source for large gears if you find one with the right number of teeth.
