What was the plan? Seems the crane was meant to be sacrificed.

I have never been up close and personal with one of those silos, but are they put together like a giant barrel with concrete staves and wire rope hoops and nothing else holding them together? I noticed the pieces were knocking out not at all like I expected, and the rubble looks like nothing was cemented or bolted together. How do you build something like that?

They are made as you mentioned - Much like a wooden barrel, concrete stave silos are made of small precast concrete blocks locked together by their ridged grooves along each edge, creating a high strength shell. Concrete is much stronger in compression than in tension, so steel hoops encircling the tower are used to reinforce and compress the staves into a tight ring.

Thank you, Dollar Bill! Back home, we used horizontal silos for silage, and a few farmers had steel vertical silos for grain. I've seen these concrete ones from a distance, but I always assumed they were made with slip formed reinforced concrete.

Isn't it a shame that the guys usually given the camera don't know too much about photography, a long lens would put him in a safe position in the event that (probably) something untoward happens which would make taking the vid worth while.
