This is the space cowboy. It took 3 years to complete. The frame is based on a Remington 1858 .44 revolver, and carved from a very large Gibeon Meteorite found in 1836 in the Namibian desert. The frame was machined by hand from a 20Lb block of the scarce material using a manual milling machine. The grips are inlaid with a rare color changing gemstone also mined in the Namibian desert called pietersite. The gold and silver accents were cast in a centrifuge using lost-wax method. The gold inlay was executed by master engraver Adam Garret. Gibeon meteorite boasts excellent strength and corrosion resistance, with a composition similar to stainless steel. The crosshatching effect on the surface of the metal is the result of the very slow cooling of a deceased planets core, forming a woven Iron-nickel alloy. This is known as Windmanstatten pattern, some scientists estimate the rate at roughly 1 degree per million years and the total age of the meteorite is 4.5 Billion years. This pattern has a holographic light shifting sheen similar to carbon fiber in the sun. The frame has been proof fired with full loads (40 rounds). I also made 6 solid meteorite rounds to put in the display case, along with the custom aluminum stand that holds the bullets and pistol in place with neodymium magnets. I grossly underestimated the amount of work this project would take. Every single cut was nerve racking, because the material is hideously expensive to replace if something goes wrong. I found myself making a pass on the mill, or drilling a hole, then thinking about the next cut for several days to hopefully guarantee a successful cut on the next pass. Next project I’ve been dreaming of is a solid meteorite lever gun. Hope y’all like the build.
