I would have waited until night then poured a couple gallons of liquid bleach and a gallon of liquid drain cleaner in the hole

Every time I have taken care of a ground hive, it has been at night - a few hours past dark when all will have returned to the hive. A good wasp/hornet spray works, but in a pinch, I take a cup of gasoline, pour it in the hole, put the cup over the opening and let the fumes do the work.

Also, check the area real well. While ground nest inhabitants are pretty territorial, that doesn't mean there aren't other nests or even other hidey-holes.

Worst one I had to deal with was under a porch at the old house. Path to get to the nest snaked under the porch for a good 50ft. So I put on two bee keeper suits, taped up the joints, etc. and headed under the porch for the long crawl in the dark. Got to the nest, saw the opening and started emptying the full can of spray. A patch about 2+ ft in diameter started rumbling. When the ground is boiling ... time to hightail it out of there. Finished emptying the can and made for the exit. Was going a little fast and didn't duck for one of the beams - ouch - but no time to stop...
