    Grooving a burin

    Grooving a burin-img_0820.jpeg
On Monday, I volunteered to dispose of a lot of old tools, mostly spanners, very greasy, and among them was this little Addis chisel, which I think was probably originally a bent gouge, as one edge is rounded. They are very brittle and it’s unfortunate if any levering is done with them.
I thought I might salvage it if I could run a groove down the flat edge.

The grinding disc is for a Proxxon mini grinder, which hasn’t seen a lot of use, I thought I might use it for carving spoons and such like. It was easy enough to hold the chisel steady in bench drill vice, but a tendency to alter the setting when picking up the vice to cool the blade, then resuming.Grooving a burin-image.jpg
As you can hopefully see, the groove is quite deep enough and now I must think of a way to hone it. I expect I shall use a bit of folded abrasive paper.

It's good that those tools were disposed of properly.
