Homemade Nickel plating for small parts

    Hi,

Allow me to introduce you to my new website, at least to the new version of my Web site : https://www.labellenote.fr/en/

It's been almost 12 years now that I have started putting things together on this Web site, but the platform I've been using was becoming outdated and slow... I had really slowed down my updates because of this ...

But here we go, like any tool in the shop, there comes a time where some maintenance is necessary, and as usual, serious maintenance includes some part of rebuilding, and that's what is good !

So I changed completely the motor, I moved to an up to date and really nice platform called Hugo (I recommend !) and found plenty of opportunities to develop software tools to entirely convert my old contents to this new platform.

And I'm pretty happy with the result ! All the big work is finished, though I still have to review all the legacy stuff and fix some conversion errors here and there ..

But now I'm starting to write new content on this platform, and I'm really happy because it's way easier and faster to do.

So, here is my last article : Homemade Nickel plating

Here is the Table of contents :

    What you need

    Preparing the electrolyte

    Preparing parts

    Theory

    Practical setup

    Polishing

    Results

    I wish you a happy reading !
Feel free to leave me any feedback.

And if you simply dissolve a known weight of copper in plain white vinegar, then do some maths to make a 95/5% nickel acetate/copper acetate mix, you can then do a cupronickel plating. This playing is a matte charcoal grey finish that does not wear off easily, due to the copper in the mix.

Interesting, thanks for the info, do you have any experience with it ? Can you possibly show picture ?
    Cheers !

Very thorough write-up. Well done, sir. I might try some nickel plating soon. I need a coating system to prevent corrosion of components that are intermittently exposed to sea water. I have to try a few different things.

When I was in grade school (1950's) and we had to do a project for science class my dad would help me build a much smaller setup for plating copper, nickel and chrome. He was a chemical engineer so all this was easy for him. I would plate nuts and bolts. I highly doubt that would be allowed today for school.
