Hopefully the driver realized why the tapered poles came loose and learned something from the very expensive and dangerous mistake.
Utility companies in Florida and other places started using these a few years ago because they hold up pretty well against hurricanes. Search for "spun concrete poles" on YouTube if interested in how they are made.

I had an uncle that was killed when the load of logs he was hauling in Montana back in 1961 came through the cab. He missed a turn in the road, and piled into the ditch. His skull cap was removed exposing his brain, he lived for a short while, but back then there was no emergency service for remote locations. Probably wouldn't have mattered. I remember it being the first funeral I attended.
I consider the driver lucky in this incident, as it looks like a big crush machine.

In addition to the headache rack -a heavy one constructed of steel and not aluminum- a truck needs a cargo stop at the forward end of the trailer bed to eliminate cargo shift during sudden stops. Just like the milling table work stop. But trucking companies are not interested in safety measures claiming that they reduce payload.

He's lucky he wasn't pinned against the steering wheel when all the others hit the back of the cab! You can see they all slid 4" or 5" forward and the cab is moved forward a foot or two.

Turn the poles around and it would become the "Iron Maiden."
