    Scrap bin scribe

    Hi folks

I had a collection of broken items that when combined together, made a neat carbide scribe.

The scribe tip was made from the shaft of a broken carbide slot mill, the end of which I ground down to a fine point. The handle/shaft(?) came from a crappy scalpel set which had come with a plastic collet that had broken in seconds, so I dug out a short drop of 1/4" round I'd put in the swarf bin from some other project and copied the plastic one as close as I could and used a hand hacksaw to cut the four splits in the collet.

I like recycled projects. When you look at one item that is scrap or broken and you think I could use that or parts of it, to improve another item is very satisfying. I’ve not been skip diving for a while.

Nice salvage save Canobi. I use broken circuit board drills all the time for similar but the cheap scalpel and your nice collet build was Great! Thanks for sharing.

Nice one Canobi, it is always so satisfying when you can make something useful out of broken items or scrap.

That's a nice handy tool. In a similar effort, here's a pin vise that I made from a dysfunctional auto punch and the motor shaft (with support bearing and chuck) from a POS rotary tool. I used to use it frequently for grinding TIG tips but I've since discovered that my screw gun does a better job faster so now it's got dedicated pin vise duty.

If you can't make it precise make it adjustable.
