Something I never understand, why so many "craftsman" waste precious material by cutting pieces out of the middle of a piece of stock. Moving pieces to the edge saves time and work ,while leaving a more useful piece for some other project down the road.

so for the totally ignorant (snow and ice is unknown where I live, and the fridge is too small to put a bike in)... can you not ride a normal bike on ice/snow?

You can ride a "normal" bike in snow if it is not too deep and you have knobby tires. A bike on ice is deadly. In a car, with 4 wheels, you slide on ice but do not usually tip over. A bike with normal tires on ice can fall over before you have time to react, skinny tire does not have enough grip to propel you forward.

Have done that when I was a kid, come off after a jump. Not cool, even with conventional rubber tyres.
