    Sand leather bag

    Hi!
Just finished a set of sand bags, useful to press or keep objects with curved profile, or as a beater bag.
Considering my purpose, as big horn stand, I decided to use oiled calf leather (from Incas, a very good italian tannery), hand sewn with waxed twine. I poured 2,5kg of dried sand in each bag, they are pretty stable and copy the pattern of the object.

Nice, I used to have a 12" diameter sand bag made out of thick raw leather I used for shaping brass and aluminum on. I really need to make another one

I would really try to build something with beater bag and the conical hammer. I think it's really an art that requires lot patience and hand to achive good results. I should have some thick leather to use, I would probably try to build one!

Trust me friend it is not all about the bag. depending on the shape you are trying to achieve you will want a selection of hammers with various shaped faces, a couple different sized dead blow with interchangeable faces, both soft and hard, that you can shape to your desires is helpful, and depending on the size of the cavity in the shape you may want to begin moving the metal around from the outside in. you will also want to have a convex shaped anvil and a really good planishing hammer with a hard polished face. I've made the tins and tanks for motorcycles in the past a couple of my favorites were tear drop and peanut shaped with golf ball dimples and pimple protrusions made out of aluminum

Wow! Thanks for the advices! I would like to try the build of a little aluminum tank for my little motorbike, even a simple one, with not so much curves. I have the feeling that it's very hard to do by hand, without english wheel or other good tools

I haven't done open heart or brain surgery yet, only because there have been no volunteers. I haven't flown an airplane with more than a single engine, I've never ran for public office, "too many untalented do nothing leaches on society waiting to do that" But if it is metal or mechanical there is not much I haven't tried at least once. My mom used to tell everyone that my dad used to take me to his shop before I was even old enough to walk place me on a furniture blanket on the floor hand me some tools and a carburetor or distributor for me to play with as my toys, I have no reason to doubt her stories because it was something I know my dad would do

Not sure about Italy and a following of benchrest shooters, but their sandbags have a great trick to fill them. The bag is complete, and a leather 'tube' attached to one end, the seam is outside. It's sized to fit a funnel; after filling desired volume it's folded and tucked into a patch pocket that seals it shut.
    Sincerely,

Thanks for the info! I've been away from shooting range for a while, I just saw a picture about the patch pocket, it seems a smart trick to seal the inside. I tested the sand bags, everything is ok, the balance is correct, I added leather belts just in case.
