A friend of mine used to have a ceremonial 42mm cannon shaped mortar sitting at the base of his flagpole, that he would often load up with black powder and use golf balls as the wadding, one day he fired it off and hit a hawk that had been circling, in the tip of its wing. Didn't seem the do much more than knock the feathers off the wing tip but that hawk spun out of the air like an airplane in a flat spin barely recovered before hitting the ground.
Never try to tell me it can't be done

I shot a mallard out of a flock that was flying at least 1/4 mile overhead. Fired a single shot, while randomly pointing my .22 pump rifle toward the birds. I was quite surprised to see the poor bird break out of the flock, and while futilely flapping one wing, fly into the ground at a 45º angle. Bullet had broken a wing. I had been hunting rabbits with another high school friend, and told him I meant to do it.
