    Rotary Table Tailstock

    Hello everyone,

Made RT tailstock for my HV6 rotary table.

It is made for that specific rotary table, not adjustable and can't be used for rotary tables with different centre heights.
Design is very simple. Base and upper block are made from 35 x 35 mm square bar / 304 stainless steel.
Base and upper block are connected with two 22 mm dia round bars (316 s.s.) which are screwed into upper block. (M12)
and tight fit into the base. Ends of these bars are turned to 13.8 mm, protruding out of the base
and serve as alignment for tailstock. (same diameter as width of cross slide slots = 13.8 mm)
(made mistake while measuring, as chuck was not properly centered on RT, so I need to use cutter blades underneath the base as shims)
Centre is made from motorcycle gearbox shaft, dia 15.8 mm. Made groove in the centre to prevent rotating,
even it is not really necessary. Used 8 mm s.s. threaded rod and made nut/knob from 4140 steel
for driving the centre in and out of upper block. Centre travel is 25 mm. Also drilled and tapped hole in upper block to put M10 clamp bolt.

Hope that above will give someone idea how to build it.

    Best regards

How is that a Rotary Table, I can see the tailstock reference but do not see a table.

Of course I am brand new to machining so there is always things to learn.

I would like to see a video of it in action probable that would answer my question.

    Hello Ralph,

You are right. Rotary table can't be seen in the video, but that 5" four jaws chuck is mounted to 6" rotary table.
Attached is extracted picture from the video which I originally made, but due to lighting behind the tailstock,
that video was much worse than one I uploaded to youtube.

    Hope that picture will suffice.

    Best regards

    Very nice job
Could you not make 2 shim washers and put them on the 22 mm round bars? Either on the shoulder where it steps down to 13.8 mm at the base block, or at 12 mm where it screws into the upper block.

    Phil,

Thanks for the comments. I could do it it before posting the video clip, I can still do that, but I was in hurry to start cutting my first spur gears. Also it will be difficult (but not impossible) to disassemble bolts from the base. Cutter blades were an easy and quick solution to the problem. My original idea was to square these 22 mm bolts in length of 10 mm in order to tighten them to upper block with the spanner. But again, I was too lazy to do that and I used pipe wrench to tighten them and marks in the bolts made made very tight fit into lower block. If I do it again (actually I can still do that one day) I will fabricate these vertical bars from hexagonal bar and will tighten them with the spanner. Had only round bars laying around.

    Best regards
