You shouldn't be roaming around in his back yard. You won't get eaten then.

    True.
But show us a place in the US (really any where) that isn't their backyard. The climber reacted precisely as recommended.

Generally a Black Bear will not attack a human. They will eat anything but not usually people. This guy did a great job. He surprised that bear as much as the bear surprised him. Bears are curious animals. I grew up in an area of Canada with many of them and they would show up fairly regularly. Our dog or the neighbors dog would scare them up a tree and they would whimper just like this one when they are scared. Attack happens when you are around their cubs, or they are acclimatized to people and people having food. And even then they rarely will eat people. Brown bear or polar bear totally different story. They will eat people without a problem. Especially Polar bears. Big cute cuddly polar bear that will saunter up to you and bat your head off your body and chow down.

Actually, the climber is disappointed because the bear was at the top before him
    Cheers !

If there is one bear below what are the odds there’s more above?
When I was young and poor I learnt a trade, and after many years of hard work I’m not young anymore.

After that first run-up by the bear, the climber could also have just thrown the contents of his pants at the bear.

I'm pretty sure he had lots of "ammo" in short order... or would that be "shart" order?

The fact he reacted quickly and correctly says preparedness. Just like concept of military maneuvers, familiarity (or awareness, at least) leads to cool-headed reactions.
I'm sure a thought crossed someones mind; why isn't he armed?
He is; both 100% busy hanging on.

That was rude! The bear just wanted a hug! That video could have ended a whole lot differently!

Seriously I think that bear was as surprised as the climber was. Did you hear the bear whimpering as it quit and walked away. That was quite a fall. ANd that bear weighed about as much as the man. All good thankfully.
