Richard Proenneke lived for 30 years in a hand-built remote Alaskan cabin, until age 82. Many others have lived similarly, and continue to do so. However, Proenneke is famous not just because he did a good job of it, but because he documented his experiences so well in a highly-regarded documentary entitled "Alone in the Wilderness".
What is less-frequently mentioned is that Proenneke was a highly-respected all-around DIY guy. He enlisted in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor and served as a carpenter. After the war, he worked as a diesel mechanic, fisherman, and heavy equipment operator. His videos include multiple homemade tool builds.
