A good friend of mine was a tillerman with the San Diego City Fire Department - Their rig didn't have a cab in the back. He said it's a harrowing ride back there trying to keep up with the driver while maneurvering through 90 degree turns on city streets at 40-50 mph. It was also manual steer with a 36 inch steering wheel.
