We've had pet rats for 15 years. Their intelligence is at the level of dogs and cats. A few were incredibly clever and self-aware. My rat Benny is featured at the end of a Wheezy Waiter video from back when he closed his videos with a wink. He's the only rat Craig ever used for the wink.

This goes to prove it is not always the second rat that gets the cheese. I've seen some large rats in New York's central park that I swear were smarter than most of the people who were there.
