    Quick bevel tool

    Hi fellow makers,

Made this little number a while back, got sick of winding back the compound to adjust angle to do simple taper or bevel. When I road tested it I had real trepidation that this is going to end badly but works well. Even finally after designing a better compound angle system still use it often for tight or small tasks and no winding required.

Thanks doug, im slowly posting stuff I've made. Had a unimat 3 for 20 years and decided wanted to do bigger projects, hence the struggle with the chinese mini lathe shortfalls. Bought in mid 2015, then came across second hand but still new mini mill in jan 2017 for good price. Still learning but enjoying challenges. Cheers

What is the purpose of the slide? I can see that when threading but not tapers/bevels.

    Very nicely made.

Very nice and great idea. Threading would out very well. and any small cut at any angle you set it at, the only draw back would be the depth of cut.
    Nice work

Thanks ralph, the whole idea is to make a cut on an angle just by sliding the cutter into the material simply by pushing then pulling the handle rather than using the compound slide, hope this makes it clearer,

Thanks nelson, travel on slide is 13mm, depth of cut or the amount of material removed on a pass depends on type of material. Brass & aluminium cuts effectively with no chatter, I've sometimes cut up to 1mm in one pass. With steel I tend to be less aggressive.

    Regards stevoh

Excellent use of mechanics, ratio of lever to handle length produces good hand-fed finishes, and round tool bit gives best clearance for light work. You can grind a separate parting bit for thin wall work too.
I'd be tempted adding a return device by pneumatic or spring, but making this an engine lathe tool is brilliant. Variations are almost exclusive to turret lathes.

Thanks toolmaker 51, now ya got me thinkin, hmm, could have used quick parting tool recently & spring return? Hmm, great input, have thought about increasing travel somehow.
    thanks

    Stevohdee,

Great idea and well executed!!! The tool is solid, compact and not complicated by unnecessary features such as dovetail slides, etc. I love it's simple form and function. I am wanting one for myself.
