useful for situations where blasting isn't an option too
I've seen stone cutters split big rocks with sleeves, wedges and not very big hammers, these things look like they are putting out some serious force.

Another proven method is to split the rock with chemicals

 but uses a shape memory alloy instead of hydraulics.
