I worked at YUL and saw more than a few belly landings and even some worst.
Served as a witness for a CL215 water bomber crash as I was on the ramp as it went down from dual failure.
Being a pilot and mechanic I was able to make qualified observations.

Always makes me wonder, why don't they "land" on the grass? Likely no sparks, and therefore less likely hood of fire.

No sparks but no friction to slow the plane. Also emergency crews have better access on runway.

That'll buff out (well maybe not).

On soft ground there's a greater tendency for things to dig in while decelerating, resulting in a higher G, less survivable impact. On paving it's more likely to slide and the impact will likely be more survivable. Foam on pavement is the best case.

Flatness. At the speed he is traveling and from above, you cannot see the contour of the ground under the grass which is more deadly than sparks. I wonder if on non paved surfaces if the turbine engines would be destroyed from debris that wouldn't be there on a solid surface. Only speculation on that, I know the engines are freaking expensive.
