Do they boil potatoes before they make the chips. Only tried making them one time. Sliced them raw. Let the dry out. Tossed them in hot oil. Were not bad, but a lot of mess for a few chips.

Boiling the first removes a lot of the starch and supposedly helps to keep them from turning brown while drying.

I should try this with apples. I need thin apple slices for my little woodland friends.

I am thinking a wire would not cut apples very well. I was questioning how well a wire would cut an unboiled potato. Unless you are feeing the critters old soft apples, a sharp knife works best, OR maybe a sharp hand plane. You could control the slice thickness with a hand plane. Turn it upside down, clamp it in place and slide the apple back and forth.

Or you could make something like this..

Be careful of your fingers when the apple gets small.

Oh that's a good idea. I like it. Thanks. This little porcupine comes in the house and only wants thinly sliced gala apples.

I just did 5#'s with the Back to Basics Apple potato peeler it peels, cores, and slices apples in about 20 seconds. the apple are sliced in spiral then one knife cut makes half moons.
The coring blade can be moved out of the way for potatos and the peeling blade can be moved to leave on the peel of the apples.
The apples are in the dehydrator as I type.
