The Evans VP-1 Volksplane is a no-frills airplane intended for amateur construction. It's designed to use a VW air-cooled engine from a Beetle, and it comes in 1 and 2 seat variants. It's legendary as an inexpensive, basic (if a bit clunky), easy-to-build wood aircraft.

Fritz does a good job documenting this build, with numerous pictures of the buildup and first flight process.

Colorado pilots may notice what appears to be a malfunctioning windsock in the final pic.
