    Might be NSF, OSHA requirement or both. Earlier, when plastic buckets were a new thing, cutting the tabs open was a razor knife or big screwdriver, prying the lid took serious hand strength.

    Many of the newer buckets now have a rip strip to pull off making it easier to open the tabs but the hook idea is still good I pry my 5 gal. oil buckets open with my finger tips but it is a little bit of a pain having to do each one of them before the lid will come off
