A long time favorite snack treat has been the Rice Krispie peanut-butter snack
The first time I remember having them was probably back in elementary school lets say for the sake of argument at least 55 years in the past. It took me years before I ever talked my mother into making them but for some reason they didn't taste like the ones we had at school, I never knew why but once while on KP in the Army Yeah I did that shore several times, anyway this old Mess Sgt decided to make them or rather he told me what to put in them and had me mix everything then spread them on several large baking sheets.
WHoa! those tasted exactly as I remembered them as a child. I never forgot the ratio 1+1+1/8+1+5+1/2
Of course in the ARMY everything was either in 1 or 10 gallons or 100 lbs at a time but the ratio never changes
So I have it as
1 cup Kayro syrup
1 cup granulated sugar
1/8 cup brown sugar light or dark it depends on your taste
1cup creamy peanut butter Yes you can substitute crunchy but it becomes 1 1/3 cup
5 cups Rice Krispies you can substitute other cereals
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts Omit the nuts is using crunchy peanut butter
in a 4 qt or larger sauce pan mix the syrup , sugar and brown sugar over medium heat stiring almost constantly until it boils as the mixture becomes clear stir in the peanut butter and nuts continue until this boils again and the mixture is nice and runny.
remove from heat and stir in the cereal and stir , and stir, Did I mention that you need to stir this a lot? Once everything is well mixed and beginning to stiffen you can either spread it out on a lightly buttered baking sheet or in a baking pan. Or do like I do which is to use waxed paper or heavy duty aluminum foil be sure to spray with cooking spray though Then I place a sheet of wax paper over the glob and with a rolling pin I roll this out to about 1`/2" thick remove the top sheet and place in the fridge until cool in My fridge it takes about 15 minutes Then I cut mine into 2" squares
One note if you use waxed paper and forget to spray or if it sticks and cannot be removed without tearing as some of the waxed papers are not made of the best quality any more an easy solution is to wet a clean cloth with very hot water press the cloth on the paper this will cause the paper to be released you canb then gently lift it away.
the treats taste great and when compared to those horrible cardboard tasting marshmallow rice krispie treats you can buy at the store they are a lot cheaper
