I use a lot of Schedule 40 1/2" PVC pipe in my irrigation system. The pipe is buried in rocky soil and my shovel seems to always find some of it. The resulting gash makes a tedious job that much worse as I dig out the section of damaged pipe and repair it with two couplers and a new length of pipe. This task strongly motivated me to find a better way to repair at least small gashes. Turns out it can be done with Schedule 40 3/4" PVC pipe. No special tools needed.
