The Paige Compositor was typesetting machine invented in the 1870s. However, the machine turned out to be imprecise, complex, and hard to maintain. Mark Twain lost $300,000 (about $6 million today) when he invested in the failed invention. Only six were built, and print houses opted for the more reliable Linotype machine.
